Launched in 2005, Publio is a quarterly magazine published by Prontis Corporation and self-funded by Publisher & Executive Editor Imad Atalla until he builds a sufficient subscription base. Publio's tag line, "Culture at the Boiling Point," reflects its mission and its readership. Often highlighting art and photography that deal with cultural identity in transformation, Publio blends socially aware writing and cogent criticism with unique imagery and layouts. Recent issues have included the photographs of Lalla Essaydi, Jonathan Moller, and William Plowman.
A native of Lebanon and a graduate of Northeastern University (Boston, MA), Atalla was a partner at a Boston computer software company. The upcoming Publio issue is a work-in-progress and may include photo essays such as Plowman's study of child labor in Pakistan and Karl Baden's photographic response to treatment for cancer. Available in Barnes and Noble stores, other bookstores, coffeehouses, and health clubs, Publio aims to reach 75,000 readers by 2008.
Publio is a magazine that stops you in your tracks.
Culture used to be local. Today, it is in transformation. The definition of culture and identity has become elusive—today it is informed by an improbable cacophony of voices. Publio celebrates this rich bedlam.
Publio: Culture at the Boiling Point.
Free of any specific political agenda or ideological bent, Publio addresses culture and identity in all facets of art, the marketplace, and belief systems. Publio's mission is to plumb the creative wealth that springs from cultural identity in transformation. With precocious attitude and studied grace, Publio's pages are the perfect complement to a relaxing moment. LET THE WORLD SING.
The Director of Photography at the Project Art Center in Cambridge, MA, from 1982 to 1985, Baden served on the board of directors at the PRC from about 1990 until 1995. Holding degrees from Syracuse University (Syracuse, NY) and the University of Illinois (Chicago, IL), he has taught at Harvard University (Cambridge, MA), Clark University (Worcester, MA), School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Rhode Island School of Design (Providence, RI). He is currently on faculty at the Department of Fine Arts at Boston College (Chestnut Hill, MA).
Represented by the Howard Yezerski Gallery in Boston and Robert Mann Gallery in New York, Baden's work has been shown at the Addison Gallery of American Art (Andover, MA), Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY), and the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park (Lincoln, MA), among many others. A National Endowment for the Arts fellowship recipient, his work can be found in many collections, including MoMA and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (Houston, TX). In 2000, Light Work (Syracuse, NY) mounted a 26-year career retrospective of his work and published a special issue of Contact Sheet. Photographing himself every day since February 23,1987, his work deals with self-imaging and, more recently, his cancer and recovery. A book aficionado, he has been collecting books that feature fine art photographs on their covers since 2002.
